Sulgrave Manor House - Friday June 30, 1922 William Howard Taft, President of the United States (1909 - 1913), accompanied by the Hon. George Harvey, American Ambassador, visited the ancestral home of the founder and first holder of the office of President, George Washington. The occasion was the first anniversary of the re-opening of Sulgrave Manor in its role as a symbol of Anglo-American amity. The ex-President was presented with a box of Brown's Original Banbury Cakes, still being baked to the same recipe today as they were in 1922 as indeed they were in the days when the Washington's were in residence in the 17th century. The occasion of the re-opening of Sulgrave Manor a year ealier, in June 1921 was marked by posting a presentation box of Banbury Cakes to the dignitaries connected with the event. These VIP's included The Prince of Wales (see thank you letter), President of America Warren Harding of America (see thank you letter) and to Earl Spencer, an ancestor of Diana, Princess of Wales (see thank you letter). |
